I never heard the song before

Brother Can You Spare a Dime

Bing Crosby
They used to tell me I was building a dream
And so I followed the mob
When there was earth to plow or guns to bear
I was always there right on the job
They used to tell me I was building a dream
With peace and glory ahead
Why should I be standing in line
Just waiting for bread?
Once I built a railroad, I made it run
Made it race against time
Once I built a railroad, now it's done
Brother, can you spare a dime?
Once I built a tower up to the sun
Brick and rivet and lime
Once I built a tower, now it's done
Brother, can you spare a dime?
Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell
Full of that yankee doodly dum
Half a million boots went sloggin' through hell
And I was the kid with the drum
Say, don't you remember, they called me Al
It was Al all the time
Why don't…
(lyrics from google)

I never heard the song before. I never heard about the song either. After I listened the first time I felt the singer's voice is nice, like the professional style. Then I search the lyrics on web, it's not a long one. I am surprise by the situation what described in the lyrics. The Great Depression was really a great depression. People even didn't have food! They need to line up for a piece of bread! Unbelievable! In 1920s half Americans own car. Immediately they can not pay for a piece of bread!
I thought about my husband's father will be 90 years old this year. He may know something about the great depression. I wonder how they made a living during the great depression. It's lucky that my father in law just called us today. My husband asked him about the question. The answer is 'don't put all the eggs into one basket'. My husband's grandfather worked in post office at that time. He also learn another skill in a collage. So after he left the post office by health problem, he went to work at Sears and another big.store because he has the skill to check eyes ( for people who need glasses ) and he also can fix watches. So his family wasn't influenced by the great depression.
Wish that kind of situation never happen in my life.
